Grid connected solar system is a process in which there is no storage facility of power and power produced by the system is directly consumed at the location and balance power is supplied to the grid.
In this solar system power produced can be used directly and extra power produced is stored in the batteries (which can be used when any other power is not available) and balance power is sent to the grid. This type of system is generally installed where there is no grid power available or there are frequent power cuts. Cost of this system is higher than grid connected system because of the cost of batteries.
Cost of solar Rooftop system varies from Rs 30,000 to Rs 45,000 depending upon the type, size and requirements of the solar system.
Solar Panels are placed on the rooftop, facing south with a specific angle to get the maximum benefit of Sun rays. These panels generate DC power but our utilities run on AC power so all the panels are connected to an inverter to convert the DC power into AC power. Now this power is consumed and the balance power is sent to the GRID through a net METER provided by DISCOM to keep the account of power supplied to the GRID and received from the GRID.
Net Meters are the Meters provided by DISCOM to record the power sent to GRID by solar system and received from GRID. After the billing period accounting is done. If solar power plant produced more units than consumed, we are paid; if power consumed is more than the power produced we are billed accordingly.
E.g.: If meter readings show that solar power system produced 100 units and consumed 90 units we will be paid for 10 units as per rates fixed by DISCOM. If only 90 units were produced by the solar power system and 100 units were consumed, we will be billed for 10 units.
Solar Rooftop system produces 4 to 5 units per day per KW depending upon the sun light available as per the weather conditions of the site. On annualised basis it is about 1450-1800 units per year per KW.

As all parts of Solar Rooftop System are electronic and there are no moving parts, cost of maintenance is almost negligible except regular cleaning of panels at least once or twice a week to keep the panels clean to get the maximum output of panels. A manual is provided with the system which contains all the required information in detail. All the SRS come with AMC for one or two years but cleaning of panels is always the responsibility of the owner or you can purchase an automatic cleaning system.
Power supply to grid is automatically and immediately stopped by solar power system so that the electricians working on Grid for maintenance may not get electrocuted.
At this time power produced by the system can be stored in the batteries if there is any provision for the same and if batteries are not present system stops producing power.
